Wow,
now we're talking. Capcom's Senjō no Ōkami
(Wolf of the Battlefied) is a classic in every way possible.
This game was so honed, so perfect and so successful
that an entire genre got named after it.
Introducing the 'Commando' game: overhead viewpoint,
military setting, crisp, bullet-dodging gameplay and
a macho, guns ablaze, let's-kick-some-ass war-lovin'
vibe. All right, high five, let's put some warheads
on foreheads, etc.
Sign of the times. But no, this isn't just an 80s thing
- war has always provided a solid dramatic backdrop
for this kind of action: a lone soldier, infiltrating
and engaging the enemy front line against seemingly
insurmountable odds. Yeah baby, born to kill and all
that.
Senjō no Ōkami is a clever, intelligent and
action-packed shooting game full of graphical flair;
a genre-defying upgrade of Taito's 1982 classic Front
Line. Distributed around the world as 'Commando',
the game was an instant worldwide smash. The snappy
'run, gun and grenade' gameplay is easily understood,
and it hides a much tougher challenge than it first
appears. In the space of a couple of levels the screen
starts to swarm with enemy soldiers, each one eagerly
trying to get a few extra stripes on their uniform.
Capcom set a huge benchmark here, and were onto something
really big. And they knew it: the very similar Gun.Smoke
(1985) appeared a meager six months later, and the competition
immediately followed suit. SNK's Ikari
(1986) and Data East's Heavy Barrel (1987)
stand out as the most worthy heirs.
A Schwarzenegger movie (related by name only) and innumerable
console & home computer conversions saw 'Commando'
go stellar by the end of 1987, albeit mostly in crude
form. The recent 'Capcom Generation 4' collection allows
a far more accurate insight into why the original arcade
was such a phenomenon, and why it still is. |
