Marketed
as a direct respone to Nintendo's Game
Boy, Sega's Game Gear was a top class handheld
device, comfortably fitting into the #2 spot.
Sega opted to go for a faster and more powerful
device than Nintendo, featuring a colour screen
and an architecture very similar to that of the
Mark III, but
with a slightly lower resolution. The end result
was a success, hampered only by the machine's
bulky size, and low battery life (6 batteries
would only last around 3 hours).
Many 4-star games appeared on the format, both
as conversions of Sega's massive arcade back catalogue
and numerous original productions. It also had
an innovative 'TV Tuner' adaptor, enabling the
machine to be turned into a portable colour television. |
