Dr.
Light has stunned the world of robotics by successfully
engineering the world's first autonomous humanoid robot,
'Rock'.
He grows fond of his little Pinocchio, and with the
help of his colleague Dr. Wily he begins working on
six new models, each one designed for a specific labour
skill.
But as the project nears completion, there is tension
in the workplace: Light's evident genius, smug demeanour
and sappy golf jokes make him hell to work with, causing
Wily to turn into an edgy and paranoid fiend, cranked
up on jealousy and gin.
He finally snaps one night, out on a bender, when an
ATM machine swallows his credit card. Jeered and humiliated
the next day by the bank staff, Wily swears right there
and then to dedicate the rest of his life to world domination.
He hijacks Light's six prototypes, reprograms them,
and begins using them as weapons in holding the world
to ransom.
So it's all down to Rock to save to world - and thanks
to Light's savvy it's a customised, powered-up 'Mega
Man' that sets off to put things right. His goal is
to destroy all six evil robots, reach Wily's HQ, and
make the bastard apologise. |

The
original Rockman is a tight, slick and wonderfully
challenging action platform game, that also happens
to be Capcom's very first original home production.
The gameplay is basic yet very well honed and deliberately
rigid: all Rock can do is run, jump and shoot - you
can't crouch or shoot upwards. The idea is to increase
your arsenal by defeating Wily's robots: after beating
one you can steal its 'special power' and use it against
the next. The trick is to know which weapon to use against
whom (see 'Tactics' below).
Rockman was a very discreet hit, that slipped
by relatively un-noticed in international territories
(re-named 'Mega Man'). In Japan it was very well received:
the cute, diminutive Astro Boy -inspired hero and his
kitsch, Saturday morning TV serial style enemies struck
an immediate chord with the young gaming public.
The vastly improved Rockman
2 (1988) is generally credited with catapulting
the series into the spotlight, yet the original game
remains a charming little title - not to mention the
start of the most prolific game series the world has
ever seen. |
