Hudson's
flawless PC Engine version is a joy
to behold even today - this
was the game that single handedly
kick started the PC Engine's
career.
The downside is that it only features half (four stages)
of the arcade - the second part was released separately!
Standard PCE case, 2Mbit HuCard,
4-page monochrome manual. |

Part
2 of Hudson's extraordinary PC
Engine version, featuring
stages 5-8.
Was the split a genuine technical issue, or was it
simply an opportunity to sell
two games instead of one?
The truth is out there...
Standard
PCE case, 2MBit HuCard, 4-page
monochrome manual. |

Despite
being technically ridiculed
by the trailblazing PC Engine
version, the Mark III R-Type
does surprisingly well.
Developed by Compile, it includes all 8
stages and even manages to throw a extra one in.
Standard 'Gold Cartridge'
packaging, 4Mbit cartridge,
monochrome booklet. |

Don't
let the nice packaging fool
you: the MSX R-Type
was, like its host hardware,
completely outdated by the
end of 1988.
Admittedly as an MSX1 title
it's of a very high standard,
but considering how late this
came out why didn't
Irem choose to develop the game for
the superior MSX2?
Large plastic case, 3Mbit
cartridge, manual. |

Presented
in the same packaging
as the MSX version, the
X68000 port is light years
ahead of it in terms of accuracy. In fact it's an excellent
version. Only one left in stock!

Look out! The GB R-Type
is a nasty botch-job whose
crude visuals and prehistoric
style of gameplay have f-all to do with what the game
is about.
Only hardened collectors need apply.
Standard small-size GB packaging, 1Mbit
cartridge, instructions booklet. |
