Nobody
is safe these days. Lightning strikes dead trees on
hilltops, fires rage out of control and evil monsters
prey on the innocent as well as each other. Knight Arthur
and Princess Prin Prin chose to ignore this, and spent
their time hanging out in the smoke, swapping anecdotes
about the rise and fall of speed garage.
They have paid the price for their nonchalance. The
princess has been kidnapped by a hissing, flying demon
known as the Red Arremer and swept away to Satan's castle.
Without even pausing to dial 911, Arthur grabs his armour
and sets off to dish out some steel, and rescue his
sweetheart as dramatically as possible.
Sometimes a game comes along with enough power to set
a benchmark, and establish itself as a head-above-the-crowd,
trend-setting behemoth. Makaimura is one of
those games: its unforgivably tough gameplay merged
perfectly with the some of the most intricately designed
levels ever seen; and Satan's hordes were easily the
most ruthless, unforgiving and 'deadly-yet-cute' enemy
designs to ever hit a game of this genre. There is comedy
at work here: whenever Arthur takes a hit, his armour
shatters, forcing him to fight on in his polka dot boxers.
The catchy theme tune crackles in your head, only to
stop with a sudden jolt whenever something goes wrong.
And something will go wrong: the game's entire course
layout is a vicious collection of deathtraps, dirty
tricks and nasty surprises, with precise patterns and
secrets to learn. Knowing the exact movement of each
enemy and location of the extra armours is essential
in making it through the game in one piece. |

Well,
practice makes perfect. And that's OK, because the game
is an absolute joy to play. Fast, rigid, addictive,
exciting... Minutes to learn, years to master. You've
also your work cut out, because the nail in the coffin
is that the game must be completed twice if
you want a shot at the Princess. Pisstake.
Often imitated, but never bettered,
Makaimura is a well made, intelligent, and
downright timeless experience... A one-off zeitgeist
of the 8-Bit arcade scene matched only by its sequel,
the extraordinary Daimakaimura
(1988).
The 1986 Famicom version (below) also became a massive
classic of its time. It presented even more challenge,
mainly due to Arthur's ever-so-jerky animation, overlong
jump and reduced firing speed. It is one nasty headfunk
of a game, that would rinse you of all of your skill
and most of your patience. It too remains one of the
great gaming highlights of the 80s, a vicious yet enchanting
challenge not easily forgotten. |

Famicom
- Stage Select |
An
essential trick:
During the title screen, hold RIGHT
Tap B - B - B, release RIGHT
Then quickly input:
UP - B - B - B
LEFT - B - B - B
DOWN - B - B - B
START
If done correctly, a screen appears displaying
the starting stage number. This screen re-appears
every time you restart or clear a stage, and it
doesn't affect your weapon or score. Very useful! |
