The King of Fighters '94
ザ・キング・オブ・ファイターズ'94
(1994)

Hot on the trail of the superb Garou Densetsu Special (1993), The King of Fighters '94 came as a massive shock.
Essentially it i
s an absolutely stunning revamp of the GDS ame engine, featuring a star-studded cast of 24 SNK characters all re-drawn in a svelte, gothic comic-book style.
The basic game system combines a number of features taken from SNK's previous releases (like the low-energy 'Finish Moves' from Garou Densetsu 2 and the 'MAX Power' gauge from Samurai Spirits) and then spices things up nicely by drastically increasing the game speed, and introducing the 'Team Battle System'.
KOF's unique '3 vs 3' set up immediately injected a smassive breath of fresh air into the tried-and-tested fighting game formula. Instead of the staple 3-round one-on-one setup, at the end of each round the winning player gains a little extra energy, while the other team's next combatant jumps in.
Everything comes together superbly, marking the beginning of a long 'golden age' for SNK: the crystal-clear gameplay, meticulous design and dramatic impact are simply master class.
The game came as a huge facelift for SNK, and a landmark event for the genre as a whole: this is where fighting games finally grew up, when at last someone managed to make a 2D fighting game that both matched and surpassed the almighty Street Fighter series.
Its success was such that it immediately became the world's favourite fighting game, and SNK's flagship series.

The basic architecture remains almost exactly the same as Garou Densetsu 2 (1992) and Garou Densetsu Special (1993), but thankfully the irritating 'Background Line' system has been done away with. Pressing C+D still unleashes the 'Strong Blow' attack; but pressing A+B now makes your character 'Dodge' and lean out of harm’s way for a second. Most major attacks and projectiles can be avoided with this manoeuvre, but look out - you can still be thrown.
This 'dodge' is by far the most interesting addition of the the gameplay, but credit where it's due: KOF'94 is choke-full of pioneering features, all of which are worth knowing in order to fully appreciate the depth of the gameplay.
Presented below is a nice 9-step guide to fully enjoy the subtleties of the very first KOF:

DODGE
The single most important and original implementation of the KOF engine is the 'dodge', or 'sway'.
Executed by pressing A+B together, this is a damn useful manoeuvre for avoiding projectile attacks - but don't rely on it during close combat: you are still vulnerable to throws.

STRONG ATTACK
Press C+D to release a powerful blow that can knock down the opponent. Some characters (like Goro, above) have a truly vicious strike.
This works exactly the same way as Garou Densetsu 2 (1992) - if guarded, you can cancel the move into a special attack.

POWER GAUGE
Hold A+B+C to charge the ‘MAXIMUM’ bar. When full, attack power increases by almost 50%, and you can pull one ‘Super Move'. Goes away by time, or by doing a Super. Note that 'MAX' lasts a lot longer if you charge it up manually rather than blocking or taking attacks.
TAUNT
Pressing C from a distance makes your character 'taunt'. In a similar to way to the Ryuko no Ken games, it serves a distinct purpose besides being cheeky: it reduces the opponent's power gauge, slows them down when they are charging their bar, and stops them reaching 'MAX'.

SUPER MOVE
Each character's 'Super Move' can be executed as many times as you wish when your energy bar is low (and flashing red), or once when your gauge is flashing 'MAXIMUM'.
It takes the least damage on MAX, and the most damage when both 'in the red' and on MAXIMUM.

SUPPORT ATTACK
This is a great feature: when your player is either 1) dizzy, or 2) being grabbed by a throw move that scores multiple hits, tap A+B+C and a teammate will jump in to help. This only works when your teammates are on the screen, and you have less energy than the opponent.
DODGE ATTACK
This is exactly the same as in Garou Densetsu Special (1993): when blocking, input Forwards + A or B when the opponent is being offensive.
Makes the upper half of the body completely invincible, but does NO damage. It is often safer to dodge, and is only used by experts who want high scores.

COMBO THROWS
A curious little historical footnote: KOF'94 was the first game in which you can actually combo throws.
For example, in Street Fighter II, Zangief's numerous Pile Driver combinations aren't 'combos' per se: they are enhanced 'tap-throws'. Here, standard 2-hit moves actually cancel into throw commands.

GUARD CANCEL
Finally a really discreet tactic, not to be underestimated: if you block at least five times in succession; input a special command and it will cancel the guard. Essentially it's almost exactly like the 'MAX Counter' system from KOF'95, except that you don't have to be on MAX - just block 5 hits, and away you go.

And there you have it. All of the game's meticulous rules and features combine brilliantly to form a viciously potent and addictive cocktail that is nigh-on impossible to fault in any way.
The perfect fighting game then? Maybe... It is easily the most playable and visually accomplished 2D fighting game to hit following the all-conquering Street Fighter II and its sequels. Its lavish backdrops and stylish designs remain impressive to this very day, and in the gameplay stakes it effortlessly holds its own, providing just as much fun, tight and razor-sharp matches as any of its innumerable sequels.
And that's saying something.

ITALY
Garou Densetsu Team

"SO THEY ARE THE ONES WHO TOPPLED
GEESE AND KRAUSER. WELL THEN,
LET’S SEE HOW STRONG THEY ARE."

The 'Fatal Fury' trio remain faithful to their Garou Densetsu Special incarnations, and the super-quick game speed of KOF'94 turns them into formidable contenders. Terry's 2-hit standing C is now really easy to use in a combo, and Andy is absurdly fast. Only Joe turns out to be a little difficult to use - his basic combinations can be tricky to pull off effectively, and his crouching D floor slide is awkward to say the least. But he does have a super-fast crouching B, and you can cancel any of his normal moves with a Baku Restsu Ken - even the floor slide.

CHINA
Psycho Soldier Team

"HUMPH... THESE GUYS ARE NOT FIGHTING FOR
PERSONAL PROFIT. THE TYPE I HATE MOST."

Athena first appeared in the classic SNK game Athena (1986), while Sie Kensou is the player-2 character from sequel Psycho Soldier (1987). They are accompanied by their master Chin Gentsai, a tricky-to-use practitioner of Drunken Fist Kung Fu. But don't let any of this weirdness put you off - China might well be the most awkward-to-use team on offer, yet it has been proven time and time again that in the right hands they can be ruthlessly efficient. Here's a good trick for Athena: if you throw the opponent and follow it up immediately with a super before they hit the ground, the throw will take the same damage as a super! Filthy business...

JAPAN
Hero Team

"JAPAN TEAM. THEY USE INTERESTING TECHNIQUES.
I WOULD LIKE THEM TO WIN."

The now-iconic Kyo Kusanagi and his 'New Japan' team-mates make their debut here, but take a back seat to the already iconic Garou Densetsu and Ryuko no Ken team-ups. It won't be until KOF'95 that Kyo will start to be in the spotlight - thanks in part to the inclusion of Saisyu Kusanagi, his father (who makes a small cameo here before the fight with Rugal) and Iori Yagami, his sworn enemy. They are a solid team: Kyo is a reliable fireball / dragon type, Benimaru is tricky to use but spectacular when mastered, and third man Goro uses Judo throws and close-range grabs, all of which are extraordinarily powerful. The expert team.

Heavy D! and his cohorts are really miscellaneous newcomers to the SNK universe, and will be the only team to be left out of KOF'95. But that's OK, because they literally own this game. KOREA
Kim's Team

"THOSE TWO WERE FORCED TO JOIN THE TEAM BY KIM.
CAN THEY EVER COME TO LIFE IN THIS TOURNAMENT?"

Kim Kaphwan, the pure-hearted Tae Kwan Do master from Garou Densetsu 2 (1993) recruited his two eccentric team mates following their escape from prison. He took it upon himself to reform and train the two criminals, unaware that they are only tagging along for the prize money.
The problem with Korea is that Kim is razor-sharp, while the other two are comparatively limited... Chang only has powerful single blows and an effective super move worth mentioning, while Choi relies solely on rapid hit-and-run techniques. They're great fun to play nonetheless: Kim can fit in up to 10 crouching Bs against big characters!

"HA, HA, HA… THEY SEEM TO BE MY GUESTS.

Ralf and Clark are the two infantrymen from SNK's classic Ikari (1986) and its sequels Dogosoken (1987) and Ikari III (1989). They are both very similar, and excellent contenders in their own right. Their commanding officer, Heidern, is a vicious and savage killing machine... An excellent choice for beginners and masters alike, he is also the only member of the cast to have a personal score to settle with the tournament's host, Rugal. These guys are deadly.

Ladies Team

"VIGOROUS GIRLS! LOOK PRETTY STRONG, TOO.
HMPH. I DO WANT YOU TO WIN..."

In a sense it's a shame that Yuri isn't that good, because her two team mates are excellent in comparison. It's strange in a way, since all the other Ryuko no Ken characters (Ryo, Robert, Takuma, King) made the transition to KOF quite well, but poor little Yuri suffered quite significantly. Mai remains just as efficient as she was in Garou Densetsu Special (1994), with efficient ground attacks and a truly vicious super move. And King - well King is deity in this game. All of her moves are devastatingly powerful and lightning fast; while her super move, the 'Illusion Dance', is completely invincible with next to no recovery time.

Ryuko no Ken Team

“THAT’S THE FAMED KYOKUGENRYU KARATE…
LET’S WAIT AND SEE IF THEY CAN GET UP HERE.”

Ryo and Robert, stars of the Ryuko no Ken series, make a smooth transition into the KOF engine with their special moves no longer requiring the charging of a 'spirit bar'. Takuma completes this trio of similar yet devastating Karatekas. Players familiar with the Street Fighter series will feel right at home here, thanks to their wide selection of familiar fireball / dragon type moves. Their only downside here is that their 'Ryuko Rambu' finish move is way too predictable, and is only worth using if the opponent is dizzy.
