Kileak The Blood
キリーク・ザ・ブラッド

(1995)

Following its launch on the 4th of December 1994, all eyes were on Sony's extraordinary PlayStation console. All of its releases were subject to particular scrutiny, especially those in 3D.
Released in January 1995, Kileak is by no means a ground-shattering production. It's just an average Doom (1993) clone, the aim of which is to navigate a clunky robot through a series of 3D corridors.
Thing is, given how early it came out it isn't half bad. The action is suitably tense, and the presentation is dark, bleak and non-obtrusive. Landing on a desolate moon, your mission is to penetrate a maze-like underground medical complex with which all contact has been lost. Slowly but surely you uncover the reason why, this while having to manage your robot's overall health and power through the game's 14 levels.
Kileak is unremarkable in many ways but to be fair it went down quite well at the time, if only for lack of competition. It's often best to keep this style of game as simple and straightforward as possible, and to its credit it does just that.
Genki later improved on the reicipe with Kileak The Blood 2 (1995) and would return to the genre once more with Beltlogger 9 (1996). All three come recommended - if you enjoy the odd mechanised corridor cruise.
