Hudson's
Granzört was only the second Supergrafx
title to be released following the machine's launch
title Battle
Ace (1989).
Based on 'Demon Motion King Granzört', a TV animation
series that ran for 41 episodes from 1989 through to
1990, the game is surprisingly slick. The action is
fast, the backgrounds are unbelievably smooth, and the
gameplay is perfectly fluid. In fact you can still pick
up this game today, and get into it straight away. You
might even be slightly wooed by the experience, and
for good reason: in 1990 this was a wonderful peak for
console technology, Neo Geo excluded.
Granzört is essentially a traditional
action / shooting game, in which you can transform between
three characters at any time during play. Each robot
- Granzört (Red), Winzert (Green) and Aquabeat
(Blue) has its own weapon and sub-weapon, all of which
are needed at some point or another to progress through
the game. It's dead easy stuff - old staple strategies
and basic platform skills will get you through this
no sweat. And it’s worth it - there are some really
nice moments and clever set-pieces as you get deeper
into the game, and the abundance of 1UP pills always
make a game last a lot longer that it should.
A bizarre classic of sorts... Not quite enough to carry
the format single-handedly, but a great game nonetheless. |

All
things considered, Granzört
is a criminally under-rated
title. It's true: in its day
it blew everything away, and
played really well.
Along with Aldynes
(1991), this remains the only
quality original material
the Supergrafx format has
to offer. And that alone makes
it worth a try.
Cardboard sleeve, PCE case,
4Mbit HuCard, colour manual. |
