Choro
Q (known as 'Penny Racers' outside of Japan) is
a massive collection of small, cutesy plastic toy cars.
The idea is to minituously collect them, or violently
launch them against each other in an extremely hazardous
arena of your choice. Whatever's your bag.
In 1996 Takara released Choro Q for the PlayStation,
first in what would become an extensive series of tie-in
video games. Essentially a straightforward 3D racer
featuring simple and addictive gameplay, the game throws
in plenty of upgrades and little side games to keep
you busy. The main game revolves around winning races
for prize money, and upgrading your machine to progress
through the increasingly difficult World Tour.
It's surprisingly addictive: there are a dozen zany
tracks on offer, each one full of tricks, traps and
secret shortcuts. Racing is all there is to it: there
are no weapons, and bumping into opponent cars doesn't
slow you down.
All right - the frame rate is admittedly a bit slow
and the game can be jerky in parts, but it plays fine
- in a 'kiddy game' kind of way. Simply release the
accelerator during sharp turns to control the drift.
All of the game's menu screens are in Japanese - but
they are easy to understand (the most expensive engine
is bound to be the best one). So save up that cash,
customise that car, and in no time you'll be hooked.
And once the Choro Q bug has bitten, there's
only one serum for the addiction: Choro Q2.
And then Choro Q3.
Beware. Good people have been lost to this thing. |
