Capcom vs SNK 2 - Millionaire Fighting 2001
カプコン バーサス エス・エヌ・ケイ2 ミリオネア ファイティング2001

(2001)

Following the mediocre Capcom vs SNK (2000), Capcom were right to try their hand again at an 'all-star' 2D fighting game. The basic recipe is sound: traditional 2D gameplay, celebrational setting, and a massive star-studded cast taken from both the Capcom and SNK stables of fighting games.
'CVS2' presents two major amendments: the irritatingly limited 'Character Ratio' system is dropped in favour of a more flexible distribution of 4 'Ratio Points' (choose anything from one 'Ratio 4' character to a 3-man '1-1-2' team) and there are now 6 different gameplay 'Grooves' to choose from, each one based on an already established play system by Capcom (C, A, P) and SNK (S, N, K).
The end result is an extraordinarily varied, open-ended, and surprisingly enduring fighting game; quite a feat considering the sheer variety on offer: with a total of 44 characters and 6 different 'Grooves' to choose from, something was bound to go wrong.
Yet only a few things did: a few characters are a little over-powered (Sagat, Blanka, Vega, Balrog) , the A-Groove 'Original Combo' mode is way too good - and then there's the 'Roll Cancel' bug.
Essentially, if you use any groove with a 'Roll', you can immediately 'cancel' the ground roll with a 'Special Move'. This is relatively hard to do, but yet it can be ruthlessly efficient. For example, if you 'roll' with Ryu, and input his 'fireball' command almost simultaneously, Ryu will roll for one frame, and suddenly break out of it to pull the fireball move - this while his body keeps all of the advantages of a roll, and be invincible.
This is clearly a 'bug', that sees tons of outrageous things happen during a high-level game: Blanka's rolling attack can go through fireballs, Ken's roundhouse kick becomes an unstoppable anti-air... Anything goes, so long as you're good enough to pull the move in time.
A major problem, yes, but for some reason the game still holds together. The sheer variety on offer somehow manages to out-flood the flaws, and if you occasionally steer clear of the usual top-tier team (A-Groove Blanka, Vega etc.) there is an absolutely massive amount of material to get your teeth into - and that might explain why to this very day CVS2 still remains one of the most popular 2D fighting games around.

The Game Cube and Xbox versions of CVS2 were subtitled 'EO' - they introduce an 'Easy Operation' mode for beginners, in which a few 'Special Moves' can be set to a single button. More importantly though, the controversial 'Roll Cancel' bug was completely eliminated. And that, as hard as it is to believe, is where the game went wrong: the 'Roll Cancel' bug is the most controversial aspect of the game yes, but in a perverse and masochistic way it is also one of the core elements of the gameplay.
As a result of this the 'EO' edition is mostly overlooked, but hey: the Xbox version supports good (but not perfect) online play, and the 'EO' beginners mode is a very welcome addition: there are many people out there who enjoy fighting games but still struggle with special commands - a small amount of leeway in their favour can only be a good thing.
