Originally developped as a simple showcase for Hudson's
own BASIC compiler, the original Bomberman (1983) made its discreet debut on a spree of
home computers including the MSX, NEC PC-6001, NEC PC
8801, Sharp MZ-700, Sharp FM-7 and even on the Sinclair
ZX Spectrum, retitled 'Eric and the Floaters'.
All of the basic incredients for the recipe are here:
a small charater, trapped in a maze, must blast his
way out of each stage by eliminating enemies with the
bombs at his disposal. This original game is real vintage
stuff - stiff, antiquated and obsolete computer gibberish
that would've immediately dissapeared into obscurity
if it wasn't for what happened next.
The second version of the game, the Famicom Bomberman (1985), saw the hat-wearing hero of the original
give way to the now-iconic spaceman outfit with trademark
head antenna; and already all of the major gameplay
traits of the series are starting to emerge: multiple
power-up icons, different enemies and much, much smoother
gameplay.
The FC Bomberman was, for lack of a better
word, a pivotal release of the period. It hit like a
bombshell, and steadily established itself as a cult
classic. The small, understated, cutesy-but-deadly character
comfortably found his place as one of the most distinguishable
gaming icons of the Famicom's golden age. The game has
also aged badly, but it still strikes as an interesting
stepping stone towards the definite incarnation of the
formula, the PC Engine Bomberman (1990).
