Never
judge a game by its cover - Data East's 'Rogue
Combat Squad - Bloody Wolf' may look like a stereotypical
'run and gun' arcade yawn, but it's actually worth
a look.
Firstly because it is in fact a classy
run and gun actioner - and secondly, it was such
a good laugh on the PC
Engine - it was easily one of the machine's
best action titles in its day.
The gameplay firmly follows the Senjo
no Ōkami (1985) template, while the visuals
are strangely reminiscent of Konami's original
Metal Gear
(1987): the layout, characters, enemies and hostages
look almost identical... The main difference is
that here the game doesn't involve sneaking around
unnoticed, but maiming everything is sight. There's
also a ton of nice original touches like different
items, hidden rooms, jumping and close-range knife
combat - an attack that would later re-appear
in Metal
Slug (1996).
The PC Engine version does a great job in replicating
the arcade's feel, despite loosing the 2P mode.
It makes amends by smoothing the gameplay a little
and improving the soundtrack.
In all it's a great example of the genre, and
one of the better 'Commando' type games of the
late 80s. |
