It's
always a treat when something as irritatingly
perfect as Blodia comes along -
a concept so pure and so well thought out,
you can't help but sit up and take notice.
No joke: this has to be one of the most
infuriatingly meticulous puzzle games ever
devised.
Blodia first appeared on home computers
circa 1983, under the moniker of 'Diablo'.
It was the brainchild of a certain Manual
Constantinidis, that went on to make a small
name for itself during the mid-80s, appearing
on a wide range of different formats (Atari
version pictured below) before getting itself
a comfy distribution deal with Broderbund.
The object of the game is simple: successfully
navigate a small marble through a set of
gutters placed on a puzzle-like grid. These
grid pieces can be slid around in a similar
way to those sliding pictorial puzzles:
one, or a whole row at a time. Once all
of these gutters have been 'worn out', the
stage is clear. Next. More. Yes. Piece of
cake. Must... stop...
For the curious, it is Hudson's 1990 PC
Engine port (left) that pays the game
the greatest homage. It is a smooth, relaxed
and no-nonsense version that benefits greatly
from the fact that it plays perfectly, and
remains super-cheap. The Game
Boy (right) does well also, but sometimes
the scrolling screen can make things a little
confusing. Still - this is the kind of game
that is perfect for handhelds.
So sit back, relax, and work your grey matter
for a little while. You might be pleasantly
surprised. |
