Bishi Bashi
ビシバシ
(1996)

Bishi Bashi Special [PS] flyer [back]

Konami's Bishi Bashi series is a madcap collection of basic, obscure and often downright disturbing competitive mini-games.
Each game allows 3 players to face off against each other, while the home PlayStation editions cater for anything up to 8 players (using two 4-player adaptors).
The crazed, hectic and deliberately absurd themes of each event make the Bishi Bashi games a riot to play, thanks in great part to the game's simple, pick-and-play controls (a 3-button system reminiscent of Konami's own Hyper Olympic) and easy access (each mini-game quickly explains the controls before you start).
Most of the arcade games were never released outside of Japan, but the 3 PlayStation releases are all highly recommended, and remain phenomenally popular to this day.
No surprise there - with 3 players, Bishi Bashi is simply hilarious. Go for it!

Bishi Bashi Champ
ビシバシチャンプ
(1996)

Super Bishi Bashi Champ
スーパービシバシチャンプ

The 2nd Bishi Bashi arcade release features 20 games and an improved cabinet design. The overall game setup remains the same, and is featured as a part of the PS Bishi Bashi Special (1998).

Handle Champ

Bizarre 2-Player spin-off variant equipped with steering wheel & pedal controls. 17 different mini-games are featured, that also manage to find their way onto the PS Bishi Bashi Special (1998).

Hyper Bishi Bashi Champ
ハイパービシバシチャンプ

A similar spin-off title to Handle Champ, but this time players use two 8-way controllers, with a stronger focus on vs competition. Also released as a part of the PS Bishi Bashi Special 2 (1999).

Step Champ

Curious spin-off title that uses 3 foot panels per player - a cross between Bishi Bashi and a Dance Dance Revolution machine. Released on PlayStation as Bishi Bashi Special 3 - Step Champ (2000).

Anime Champ
アニメチャンプ

(2000)
Anime-themed quiz variant, featuring 5 (relatively obscure) anime series: Himitsu no Akko-chan, Ikkyū-san, Mahō Tsukai Sally, GeGeGe no Kitaro and Ōkami Shōnen Ken.

Last but not least comes Success' PS port of Salaryman Champ (2000).
Just as good as Konami's games, if not more so: it features some truly nail-biting wit and pathos about 'salaryman' culture.
Brilliant. Who said the Japanese weren't self-analytical?

CD case, PlayStation CD-ROM disc, colour booklet, spine card.
