Baseball
Stars Professional was part of SNK's very
first batch of Neo
Geo releases. It came as a very welcome relief
from the carnage and destruction of the other
titles on offer, while still serving as a good
showcase for the machine's high performance in
the visual and aural fields.
The game was almost certainly commissioned as
a response to the massive stateside success of
the Famicom Baseball
Star (1989). Just like its predecessor it
manages to spice up the usually monotonous sport
of baseball by throwing in a number of witty comical
touches, a jazzy soundtrack and a tongue-in-cheek
commentator full of smarmy (but repetitive) comments
about the players / game / weather etc. This in-your-face
presentation and style creates a potent cocktail,
that almost manages to disguise the fact that
the gameplay is completely random: hit and hope
- the base of all baseball games.
Still, this was an amazing release in its day,
and it can still be downright hilarious as a 2-player
versus game.

It eventually showed up six
months after the Neo Geo CD
version of Baseball
Stars 2 (1992).
