Baseball Star - Mezase Sankanō
ベースボールスター めざせ三冠王
(1989)

Baseball Star was one of SNK's very first original productions for the Nintendo Famicom, and was a massive hit in the USA - mainly because it was the first baseball game in which you could buy, name and trade players; upgrading them at will with $ earned from victorious games. Once all of that is done, you can then save all of your hard grind thanks to the game's battery backup feature.
Alright. This may seem a little dumb and irrelevant in the short term, but this is a serious matter: numbers and stats are a very important aspect of the game of baseball.
But then aside from all of these bells and whistles, the only thing we have here is a really standard baseball fare: wait for a relatively accurate pitch to come, swing away, and hope for the best. Bang. Yay. Home run. High five.
Vintage Famicom action then - if anything SNK should be commended for immediately stealing the show, creating on a whim the best baseball game of its era, that also serves as an interesting precursor to the Neo Geo's landmark arcade baseball game Baseball Stars Professional (1990).
