The
MD Assault
Suit Leynos (1990) was in its day one of the best robot action games for a home console, although sadly the
game never got the exposure it deserved.
It was one hell of a tough game though, and maybe that's the reason why it never put on general worldwide release. Publishers would have immediately assumed that the mainstream gaming public wasn't ready
such rigid gameplay and tough level memorisation.
Assault Suits Valken is the second game
in the series, and for starters is a lot more
accessible than its predecessor. The larger character
is easier to control and the action feels smoother and more responsive.
Also, the visual presentation of the game is nothing short of superb. Dramatic 'Mech games' have always been very popular in Japan, but the excellent design work of Valken is only one aspect
of the game's success: the gameplay is there to match. Here the 16-bit action
/ mech genre has been pushed to sheer perfection.
Everything is so perfect that eventually Konami opted to distribute the game in the
US and Europe, with a significant amount of reluctance: firstly by renaming it 'Cybernator' (pronounce with deep Hollywood
trailer -style voice) and censoring the controversial
stage in which you have to 'terminate the command' of a corrupt
president. Ho ho.
Valken is a real highlight of the SFC's library. Its reputation
is such that it got a full re-release
on PS2 in 2004 by Psikyo, but sadly this version offers nothing over what is best remembered as a classic of its time.
