Assault Suit Leynos
重装騎兵レイノス
16 Mar 1990

Released quite early in the Mega Drive's life, Assault Suit Leynos was a relatively discreet third-party title by NCS, that remained mostly unknown outside of Japan (and the import market). It did get itself a limited U.S. release under the title 'Target Earth', but even that went mostly unnoticed.
And that is a crime, because Leynos is an absolutely superb action / shooting game, and a real highlight of the Mega Drive's early library. Solid and meticulous gameplay, a vicious difficulty level and intricately varied stages will keep even the most hardened of players on their toes, in a tense strategic battle against an invading enemy armada and an ever-recurring 'Game Over' screen. This game is tough.
It will forever remain a mystery why nobody chose not to give this a more widespread release. It would have done well - as did its Super Famicom follow-up Assault Suits Valken (1992) when its was published internationally as 'Cybernator'.
A very recommended and criminally under-rated title - as is its sequel, the Sega Saturn Assault Suit Leynos 2 (1997).
