Capcom's
Area 88 takes it name, characters and setting
from a popular manga comic strip by Kaoru Shintani that
tells the story of a small group of mercenary fighter
pilots. Capcom in turn transformed it into an excellent
horizontal shooting game.
This is Capcom in their prime. Razor-sharp 2-player
action sees you blast your way through enemy territory
earning $ by downing foes; you can then quip your craft
with superior weaponry and shields during the next stage.
Careful use of these weapons and not being too spendthrift
is the key to reaching the end of this 10-round marathon
with a respectable end score.
It's your standard shooting fare, but perfectly executed...
You'd expect nothing less from Capcom, who were on a
massive roll at the time: after Daimakaimura
(1989) and Strider
Hiryu (1989)
they were riding high as the undeniable masters of video
game design.
Renamed 'U.N. Squadron' for worldwide distribution,
the game was given a lesser-known
arcade sequel U.S.
Navy (1990) before being
converted onto the Super Famicom in 1991.
