While it doesn't bring anything new to the table, Act-Fancer is a perfectly decent little arcade game.
Presented as
third in Data East's 'Evolution' trilogy after Darwin 4078 (1986) and Super Real Darwin (1987), instead of a vertical shooting game this is a horizontal shooting / platform game, similar to Data East's genial Chelnov (1988) but nowhere near as fast or fluid.
Still, it's not too bad. It certainly has a solid structure and plenty of clutch moments if you enjoy the genre. It didn't help that it got a very limited arcade release - maybe it would have found a larger audience if it was released on a console.
Its main appeal remains in the series' distinctive visual style and 'evolution' power up system.
